South Park S12E07
“Super Fun Time”

So we are now left for months without any more South Park. I didn’t realize that this was the mid-season finale until I went to the South Park website to watch the latest episode. Though, I must say that watching this episode certainly is going to make the absence more bearable. It was a middling episode, which managed to avoid many of the valleys of this season, while also dodging the greatness that was present in the previous two seasons.
This episode avoided preaching more than other episodes. In fact, it didn’t preach at all, which is a weakness as much as it is a strength of a given episode. The show is at its best when it is mocking society and pop culture, but when it takes those critiques too far the show becomes derailed (see: the Britney Spears episode earlier this season). There was no message here, it was the characters dropped into a situation and just reacting, which is funny enough but never laugh out loud hilarious.
The “Pioneer Village” story line was pretty good. The staying in character looked like it was going to get old quite quickly, until it progressed to the extreme. The two best parts were in the office when the Blacksmith throws the Storekeep up against the wall and points at the sign that reads, “Never Break Character” and when the Blacksmith shot the Sheriff, as he was about to reveal the code.
Cartman, by far the most entertaining character on the show, was able to get some time to shine. Playing off Butters puts both of them at their best, yet sadly that couldn’t overcome the mediocrity of the plot. The hand-holding and the use of Cartman as a bludgeon were definite highs.
Lastly, I always enjoy a good Die Hard reference. And I lied above when I said that I didn’t laugh out loud during this episode, when the man flipped through the cheeseburger and it had money sound effects, that did me in.
Miscellaneous Quotes
“Life goes by pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, and do whatever you want all the time, you could miss it.” — Cartman
“Don’t be too hard on yourself Butters, you can’t help being a douchebag.” — Cartman
“Let’s head to TGI Friday’s and get some jalapeno poppers.” — “Pioneer Village” employee
